Geek is Sexy!

My Kindred Spirits

Geek: n. A person with an unusual or odd personality

Jealous Tink

From the mind of a twenty-something Virginian suburban mom, slightly geekified - okay, alot geekified - comes ramblings on life, love and other wacky ideas...most of which make no sense. "Forget regret, or life is yours to miss. No other road, no other way, no day but today." Take it or leave it!

All I did today was church and silly (look, the baby has a chainsaw!) baby shower games....why do I feel like turning into a potato? Oh yeah....I'm an old fart now. I has proof, let me tell it to you.

Y'all know Paul and I have a DVR and we're total geeks? Good, all caught up. So like every good little geekling, we DVR Jeopardy! It's the current Teen Tournament and one of the categories was Celebs. Now, I'd LIKE to think I'm an all-knowing pop culture guru. Yeah, about that. Paul and I looked at each other like "Who the HELL are these people?" Didn't know ANY of the trendy, new, flash in the pan "celebrities." Never heard of them. Well, except for Scarlett Johannson, but we were a little slow on the uptake for that clue. Yup. Old farts. Complete with yelling "Kids and their damn music!" at the TV.

I need to start breeding teenagers of my own, like now, just so I can have a clue. And so they can fetch me things like tea and water when I'm sprawled out on the couch and completely, unfathomably incapable of getting my ass up to get it myself. Sigh. Still under 30 and even more clueless than when I was under 20.

It's a dreary day. Which means it's the perfect day for movies and continuing my head start on holiday cards for the year. Which means that my hands are getting rather inky. And I seem to be missing one or two stamps. Guess this means it's almost that time of year to reorganize my stamps. Fun!
Michael Fassbender and Leasi Andrews

Michael Fassbender attended AFI Fest Awards and the 'A Single Man' party Thursday evening with Leasi Andrews, to accept the prize for 'Fish Tank'.

Andrea Arnold’s “Fish Tank” and Javier Rebello’s “Woman Without Piano” are the joint winners of the AFI Fest New Lights Competition.

“I’d like to thank Rose [Kuo] and everybody at AFI and IFC [the film’s distributor] for championing independent film,” said actor Michael Fassbender reading a statement from the director Thursday night. Unfortunately, the crowd chatted during the short awards presentation, so some of the moments the films might have received were drowned out.

Actress and filmmaker Angela Bassett, who chaired the jury, presented the awards, and “Fish Tank” star Michael Fassbender accepted the prize on behalf of the film.

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

I am a potato

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Today was an early day. Which makes me go "Grrr! Arrgh!" But it had its benefits. Like getting out of the house. Today I went over to Bonnie's and helped haul stuff out of her basement for a flea market this weekend and stuff that was to be donated. I even took a few things home with me (yay free platter!). And it was a good day....even if I took the bus two stops too far (it was an easy walk back though) and my back hurts. And I hit the "Oh ye gods I need a nap" wall around 3:30.

The only unpleasant discovery was the bus fare went up. Only by fifty cents, but it was a surprise. Why yes, it has been that long since I've had to take a bus. However, somethings on the buslines haven't changed. Like the people going to work or wherever. And there's still that one guy that is listening to his iPod WAY too loud. I was sitting across from this guy and I could hear his music as clear as if I were wearing the headphones and not him. And the horrendous singing when he sang along! Like the growl of a nasty, ill-trained Rottweiler. I was so glad when he got off the bus.

But if you'll now excuse me...I want to go be potato like.

Grim has apparently found Horrible Histories on YouTube. I are amused. I highly recommend hunting them down on YouTube.

Or for you lazy folks, Horrible Histories does to history what Monty Python did to the Holy Grail. It plays with history and makes it as funny as it's supposed to be.

And speaking as someone who holds a degree in history, I'd like to take a moment on behalf of historians, history teachers, and history geeks everywhere and say this. Why YES, yes we are that sick, twisted, and disturbed. We like dead things. But we are still largely cuddly. And harmless.

It's been a rather laid back Halloween. Well, except for getting up early this morning for a state exam. It was there. I can only hope I did well. We'll see in a couple weeks. I saw a friend from college when I got out. I could only wave hi since I decided it would be an opportune moment to call my mom. And ya know...I do hear myself when I talk to them and yeah, the downstate "accent" really comes out. I can recognize it when I hear myself talk to family. It's kinda weird to hear.

No trick or treaters today. Which makes me sad, not that I expected many, if any at all. We live in a neighborhood with very few children. And it started raining earlier, so that's off putting I suspect. God I miss the days when Halloween was an event with my friends. Calls being made back and forth of where we were meeting up, which houses we would hit. And if Halloween was on a weekend, whose house we would spend the night at after we were done. I remember the first Halloween when we made a big deal of it. We all ended up at my best friend's house watching scary movies. We were watching The Craft, and I made a comment and made half the room go "WTF?" cause everyone thought I fell asleep. Silly friends. :-p Those were the good times. I miss those outings. I miss getting together during holiday breaks or just heading to the diner on a Friday or Saturday night. I feel bad sometimes that I drifted away from the old hometown crew, but I moved out of town. Life got in the way. *shrug* I still see them sometimes when I visit Long Island, but it isn't the same. We're all still friends I guess, but we've all got other things in our lives to worry about. Sigh.

Happy Halloween!

EDIT: If you're reading this, our maintenance is OVER! The problem was not found on our equipment, which means we'll have to work with our ISP to fix this small problem -- which also means another maintenance window in the future -- but at least we have eliminated our side.

Thank you everyone, and a special shout out to [info]rekoil for giving me a great suggestion AND also the opportunity to feel like I've just called in to a local radio station.

Have a great day, night or afternoon wherever you may be.

---

Hi everyone, sorry for the late notice but I'm going to have to do some testing on 1 of our 4 internet circuits TONIGHT; Friday night or Saturday morning depending on which time zone you're in.

Most of us shouldn't notice any impact, though there may be some slowness or lag when I switch traffic on to our other ISP circuits and then another hit when I stop the tests. If a page won't load or times out, try hitting refresh 1 or 2 times and it should load then. If it doesn't work at all... trust me, I'll be typing really really really fast to try to undo whatever I just did. Hopefully you'll have some Halloween candy (if you're in the USA and celebrate that kind of thing) nearby to take away the bitterness of a small site outage. :(

Here's the handy-dandy Website That I Always Use to get a feel for when the maintenance will start in your area. Our site traffic historically dips on Friday afternoons until Saturday morning which is why we tend to pick this time for maintenance work.

status.livejournal.org will, of course be updated before and after the maintenance window. Or else [info]marta will get mad at me. :D

What are you going to be for Halloween this year? Are you going to wear coordinating costumes with a friend or partner? Did you buy something pre-fab or make it yourself?

This year, I'm a flapper (or a hooker, the "dress" is rather short). And my almost-husband is a 1930s era gangster, so I suppose we are coordinating just a tad. Unfortunately, it's pre-fab, I just couldn't get up the gumption to figure something out all by my onesies. And besides, I've always wanted to be a flapper anyway. I like the look of them.

In response to user comments from last week, we want to let you know that we'll remain LJ cut-free for the next month in order to get more eyeballs on our evolving newsletter. As for product coverage, that continues to be our top priority. For more granular detail, however, we recommend you join [info]lj_releases.

Super-tweak for Yandex search

Some of our beta testers expressed privacy concerns using the Yandex search engine. Here's why: Last week, when you ran a search, you could see the usernames (and only the usernames) of everyone who commented on an entry, even if that entry was switched to Private or Friends Only after it was originally indexed. You could NOT see the actual comments from Friends Only or Private posts. In response to your input, we've implemented a fix to keep all user activity currently marked Friends Only or Private completely hidden. If you'd prefer your public content not to be indexed by Yandex, click here and use the settings labeled Search Inclusion (this covers your entire journal) and/or Comment Search Inclusion (which covers comments only). To test drive Yandex search now, click here.

Postcards from the edge

Several years ago, we asked LiveJournal users to send postcards to help us decorate our dull, white-washed offices. Since a good idea warrants repetition, we're at it again (same issue, new address). We hope you'll surround us with LiveJournal love by sending your postcards to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. We'll post snapshots right here. Be sure to include your username, since we'll randomly pick 10 lucky recipients to win free paid account time.

Conquer Writer's Block

Here are some excerpts from this week's most popular question of the day:

If a friend or relative makes a racist or homophobic remark, do you tend to confront them or let it slide? Are you more likely to confront them if it offends you directly or someone else who seems reluctant to speak up?
  1. I find it easier to stand up for other people, and i wouldn't let it slide if they made a rude or hurtful comment.
  2. Usually if a friend makes a racist or homophobic remark, I tend to let it slide. I think that while i would not say such things myself, I have no right to censor those around me.
  3. This happens all of the time. I confront some relatives, but I refuse to if they are drunk or watch Fox News.
  4. I'd let it slide if it was just a private remark... As much as I despise bigotry and intolerance, I know that you can't change people-they have to change themselves ...
  5. Confront! confront! confront! Politely, but without equivocation.
  6. SPEAK UP. Always, always, always speak up. Letting something slide lets ignorance win. No matter if it offends me directly, or someone else, I will confront the speaker and let them know that's not ok.
  7. I don't get offended personally. As an immigrant, woman, gay and person of color if I took every single potentially offensive remark seriously I wouldn't get anything done.
  8. I punch them in the balls. With my mind.
  9. I do speak up, but often very timidly because I feel that I'm white and therefore I don't really have any authority to lecture someone on what's racist and what isn't...
  10. Generally speaking, I do not let this shit fly, because it reduces me as a person, to this non-person and it replicates the destructive discourse that makes sure that sexual minorities, racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, trans people and every intersection thereof into something other than human... And sometimes... I'm just too tired to deal with it, so I roll my eyes, make a sarcastic remark and hope the conversation moves on quickly.

Lesson of the day: When searching for a picture of Jared Padalecki with a mouthful of candy, putting "jared padalecki candy" into Google's image search will not provide the images you're looking for, but will offer up some lovely alternatives. (Hint: The most common results involve Jared being referred to as "eye candy." Oops.)

We're still planning the reception and looking into the Holiday Inn on Wolf Road. We called them earlier and so far it looks good as an option. They certainly satisfy some of the needs I've been wanting. They're easy to get to, there's (obviously) hotel space, they seem willing to be pretty flexible with options (and kids are discounted, so we may be able to afford to factor them in!) and there are places to eat nearby for people who have to travel in from out of town. So it's looking like a viable option. I hope that this will be something that will work for us.

Last night I had an odd dream. I was going into a rehab center in Copenhagen (yes, as in the city in Denmark). I had to have my black file folder with me at all times and my 'mentor' in the facility was my college roommate from freshman year. Dormitory rooms were off the kitchens and I remember sleeping amongst loaves upon loaves of bread and sandwiches. And I remember hearing one of the counselors saying that people with friend-friends (imaginary friends) were most likely to get out of rehab. In one of my meetings during this dream, the therapist asked why I didn't really believe in God even though I had marked myself as Catholic on the intake forms. Which is about when I woke up. Seriously, no idea what that was about.
